I have a new website (& blog)!

Hey everyone! The cat is out of the bag: I (finally) have a new website! And with it, comes a shiny new blog too, where I'll be posting from time to time about my freelancing life and things that caught my eye. I might post some life updates too and share photos of places I've been because I do love sharing these. The thing is, I want my new blog to be a little more professional and in line with my website, and I grew a bit tired of sharing snippets of my life over here purely because I'm already doing it on Instagram via stories! You must have noticed that I've hardly posted on the blog since the beginning of the year anyway ;)

I'm leaving this one live because I really want people to be able to come back to it whenever they feel like it or if there are any blog posts that they want to refer back to. Plus, I've got all these wallpaper giveaways that I want to keep available :)

So if you'd like to see the new website, it's right HERE. And make sure to follow me on Instagram for some day to day updates, behind the scenes and work in progress!

Thanks for everything guys and if you've been following me since the beginning of this blog, then you're truly a rock star!

Portfolio Update - Not Very Lady Like

Well, here's a project that I couldn't wait to share with you all! I've been working with Lauren for more than a year now and I'm so glad that our collaboration is still going strong.

When she contacted me, her Etsy shop Not Very Lady Like was just starting out and she had loads of ideas for new designs inspired by her feminist side and Harry Potter (although you'll also find some other themed designs too). Our process is very simple: She comes up with the ideas, I work my magic on the designs, and she then embroiders them beautifully on carefully sourced clothes.

Lauren is so talented and I can't wait to see what we come up with next!

See more of the designs I created on my website and shop these amazing embroidered items on Not Very Lady Like :)

Wallpaper Giveaway - Slow Down

Hey guys! It's time for a new wallpaper giveaway, full of good vibes, cosiness, and soothing pink and purple hues :)

It's almost December (say what?!) and when I realised that, I thought it was time for me to relax a bit more and slow down. I'm not talking about work really, because to be honest, this time of year is always a bit busy with clients wanting to get things done before Christmas (and it's great!), but I'm talking about everyday life. I love the fact that my days are buzzing with new projects to work on, but I also enjoy taking it slow in the evenings and weekends to recharge the batteries.

Although in the Summer I always feel like doing something, going outside and exploring, when Winter comes, I tend to be less eager to do all that and prefer to stay cosy in the house. I think this is mostly because passed 5.30pm it's completely dark outside ;)

This year has been a bit crazy again and I think I'm ready to relax for the last month of 2018. When thinking about the new wallpaper I wanted to create, I couldn't help but want to add a nice cup of hot chocolate with some Christmassy inspired pattern as I felt it was a good representation of December!

You'll notice that I used the same style for the steam as I did with the smoke on my Folktale illustrations. Well, what can I say, I thoroughly enjoyed creating the Folktale Week illustrations and it taught me quite a lot in the end! This challenge really helped me figure out a lot of things with my way of illustrating and I came from it feeling more confident about my work and my skills :)

Anyway! If like me, you're ready to slow down a bit, feel free to download these new wallpapers!

These wallpapers are free as usual but I would just like to remind people that they're only for personal use, thank you :)

Wallpaper Giveaway - Cosy Autumn

It's been a while! Earlier this week, I decided I would create a nice autumnal wallpaper giveaway, but this time I thought I would ditch my usual habit of working digitally and took my paint and brushes out of the cupboard! I was a bit apprehensive, because to be honest, it's been such a long time since I'd illustrated something by hand from start to finish, mixing real paints to get the right colour I wanted, etc. But I kind of liked it and thought it wasn't so bad after all!

Instead of scanning my artwork, I thought it would be best to take photos so that I wasn't losing any details and it wouldn't look so 'flat'. It turned out so much better this way and I think I'm definitely going to carry on with photos instead of scans for this type of artwork!

What do you think? Would you like to see more of this type of painted illustration in my giveaways? Let me know!

These wallpapers are free as usual but I would just like to remind people that they're only for personal use, thank you :)

Time to be a Mrs!

OH, MY, GOSH! Who knew six and a half years ago that we would end up living in France together, start our own businesses and get married?! Life is truly amazing sometimes.

The funny thing is that I wasn't supposed to be working in North Wales, and therefore meet Jason. The job that I found in London dropped me last minute so that's how I ended up searching for a position anywhere in the UK and View Creative was the design company that gave me a chance. I'm so grateful for this because not only it allowed me to work 5 years as a graphic designer in a great company, but also because I got to meet the man that I'm now marrying. Life eh?!

Since the beginning of our relationship, we've been a great team, deciding things together and making life choices that we were both happy about. It hasn't been all butterflies and rainbows, and there has been a few compromises along the way, but I wouldn't change anything and these past years have definitely been the best in my life on so many levels. I'm so happy to become Jason's wife (even though it still sounds so weird haha) and I'm super excited to see where life will take us as a married couple :)

We're getting married in just a couple of days now and we're having a week off straight after so I'm obviously going to be a bit quiet over here and on social media (although I'll probably share a few photos!). Sending a lot of love your way!

Wallpaper Giveaway - You got this

Ok, we're well into August now and I've just realised that I haven't done a wallpaper giveaway since May (insert shocked emoji face)! I wanted to carry on with inspirational words that can give you the motivation you need with whatever is going on in your life and I thought about this quote that comes up quite regularly online: You got this.

In times when I feel overwhelmed and focus too much on negative thoughts, I always try to take a step back and look at it all in another way. I've mentioned it before in this blog, but it's been quite a few years now that I'm really working on focusing on the positive in my life. Sometimes I tell myself that everything will be alright in the end (see previous wallpaper giveaway here) but sometimes I feel that I just need my confidence back. No more doubts, no more "Am I ever going to manage?", just that determined feeling of being in control of what you're doing and undertaking.

So there you go, my way of seeing it all is to concentrate on the cool things around you and things that you love. A cat, some nice weather and cake are three of my favourite things so I had to include them in the artwork! Not to mention pastelly colours and cutesy little stars :)

I hope this one will inspire you too!

These wallpapers are free as usual but I would just like to remind people that they're only for personal use, thank you :)

New Account on Instagram!

Guys! I recently opened a new Instagram account for all my design work instead of mixing it all with my photos on my personal account so if you fancy following it, here's the link RIGHT HERE!

It's now been 2 years that I'm a full-time freelancer and I felt that it was time for me to properly separate my personal photos and my design work. It started to feel quite frustrating mixing them purely because I always felt that my grid wasn't looking right and it was very restrictive in the end. Now I feel totally free to post whatever I want to share without having to worry about the fact that it might clash with the photo next to it :)

Plus, I want people and potential clients out there to really see me as a professional designer that knows what she's doing! My aim is to show a good range of work that really represents my style and the type of work I enjoy creating. This way, if people want to reach out for a collaboration, they'll already have a good idea of what I do and if I'm a good fit for their project.

Anyway, I know I haven't shared much so far but it already feels right to me and every time I open my profile, I'm proud to see all these little snippets and it really is my happy place :)

Life Lately...

Well, half of the year is gone and I just can't get my head around it! I love Summer and everything, but time is going so fast! I guess this is what happens when you're busy with work and everyday life. Next thing you know, you haven't posted on your blog for a few weeks, it's suddenly much warmer outside and bumble bees are making a noisy nest under your house (true story)! So I thought I would give you a little update on what's been happening around here...

First of all, yes, I've been quite busy with work and although I'd love to share more, I'm at the stage with a few projects where things aren't quite finalised so you're gonna have to wait a bit! I've been working again with TeamAuthor UK and I've got a couple of books on the go that I'm SO excited about! I've also been working on a few t-shirt designs for different clients, which is really cool, and I'm pleased to say that I now have THREE French clients, woohoo! Make sure to have a look at some of the sneak peeks I'm sharing on my Insta stories and grid ;)

One thing I'd love to share with you though is this book: The Contest, written by Melita Cyril (Yep, the same author that wrote Quinn's Socks!). If your kids or any of your family and friends love football, then this book is for you! With the World Cup starting today, it's a good excuse to get it. You can even personalise the child's name in the story and change his/her appearance! Make sure to check out Q for Quinn for more :)

Other than that, life is basically just carrying on! Although it's been quite warm lately, we've also had a lot of thunderstorms, resulting in weekends being more inside than outside unfortunately. I literally have a list of places that we need to see and so far we haven't been able to cross off that many... I'm really hoping that this weekend will be nice so that we can get out and about. I love sharing photos of places we've discovered on the blog and I miss it. Fingers crossed I'll be able to share a lot more in the months to come!

We're officially less than 3 months away from our wedding, which is super exciting! I just need to get my shoes (we're waiting for the sales as I've been eyeing this gorgeous pair from Minelli) and Jason needs a new belt. That's about it! We're so chuffed with the fact that we kept it as simple and cheap as possible whilst still being happy with everything. I know that for a lot of people, our tiny wedding would be a joke, but for us it's just perfect and definitely stress-free.

I know it's a bit early to talk about it, but we've just purchased our flight tickets to North Wales for Christmas! It's kind of a big deal for me as it's the first time I won't be spending Christmas in France. Even though I lived more than 5 years in Wales, I would always come back to stay with my family during this time of year. It's going to be great I'm sure, but definitely a change for me. I think I'm mostly sad about the delicious food I'm not going to have this year. I mean, there's no doubt that I'm going to eat well with Jason's family, but come on, French food at Christmas is just the best.

Anyway! Things are going well, money is a bit tight, but we've got a few things planned soon (like a day out in Futuroscope, yay!) that makes me happy. Lately I've been concentrating on the little things in our day to day life that make me happy and keep me in a positive mood. You don't need much sometimes :). I hope you're all doing great and that you've planned some exciting Summer trips!

Wallpaper Giveaway - Everything will be Alright

It's been a while, I know! But I've been busy, and life happens, and so I didn't really take the time to do anything just for me until now.

I chose this quote because it actually reflects quite well how we've been feeling, and thinking, lately. France so far has been such a good experience, except for the paperwork (like I've previously said, it's hell), and after more than a year living in Bretagne, we finally feel that things are getting sorted. Jason finally has health insurance, we're sorting out our taxes, wedding plans are almost done, and the paperwork for Jason's car is underway. And that's just the most important stuff! As you can imagine, there are loads of other little things that needed to be done too (#adulting).

So since we came back from our holiday, I keep thinking "Everything will be alright in the end". And that's true. We're not the kind of people that give up on something. Even if things are hard, we carry on and do whatever we can to make it better and sort it out. So I think that's a good reminder: when things feel rubbish and you can't see the end of the tunnel, remember that eventually, if you keep working at it, it will all be fine in the end.

It's such a happy and feel good quote that I wanted to have loads of cute and colourful elements around it, so that it brings a smile on your face every time you look at your screens!

These wallpapers are free as usual but I would just like to remind people that they're only for personal use, thank you :)

Happy Easter!

Is everyone looking forward to ALL the chocolate?! I know I am! Although to be honest, I didn't wait until this weekend to crack open the bag of Milka mini eggs!

Life has been a bit a bit tough lately and I try and concentrate on the positive around me instead of feeling like everything is going wrong, but honestly, why is all the rubbish/stressful stuff happening at the same time?? It's like the universe is trying to send me a message ha.

Anyway, Jason and I are focusing on all the good moments together, the projects that we love working on and the amazing families that we have (oh and food! We're having all the comfort food). We keep telling ourselves that life is too short to worry about "the little things", and with a couple of our family members currently in hospital, we realise this even more and feel lucky to be healthy.

So, to finish on a more positive and uplifting note:
Enjoy this weekend with your loved ones, eat too much chocolate, laugh until your belly hurts and give extra hugs to everyone around you! We all have our worries and things going wrong in our lives but at the end of the day, we just need to concentrate on all the things we're grateful for, with a big smile on our faces :)

Wallpaper Giveaway - Spring (finally!)

I've been meaning to do a new wallpaper giveaway for ages now but never got around to doing it... until today! I'm a little bit late to the game but still wanted to celebrate the fact that we're officially in Spring now, after a Winter that seemed to have lasted forever. I have to say though, the heating is still on in the house because we still have bloody cold temperatures most days and I honestly hope that by April, this whole cold and gloomy weather will be over! At least I don't have snow so I can't complain too much ;)

I hope you like this new lettering I created especially for you! It was quite nice and relaxing to do something just for fun actually.

These wallpapers are free as usual but I would just like to remind people that they're only for personal use, thank you :)

A Peek into my Freelance Life

Yes this is a long title but I could honestly not find a better one that would also be shorter! Since I went freelance, a lot of things have changed in my life and although some of these changes are quite small, they’re still happening and I thought you curious lot might want to hear about it!

These are obviously comments from my own experience and although you might find them helpful if you’re thinking of going freelance, please bear in mind that everybody is different and you might not experience the same things as me!

First of all, my stress level has changed.
It’s not a secret that I’m the kind of person that can get stressed out quite easily. With Jason being quite laid back, having him around me does help a lot. When I used to work in a design agency, I was always stressed out about something. Sometimes for the obvious reasons like waiting for a client’s feedback or having to rush to finish a piece of work on time. But sometimes about things that you don’t have to deal with when you’re working on your own, like having to deal with projects that haven’t been managed properly or getting nowhere with a project that you knew from the start wasn’t right for you.

Basically, I stress about things that I can’t control, and when you’re working in a company, there are loads of things that you just can’t control, which is normal. The difference now that I’m self-employed is that I know exactly what’s going on, which project needs finishing when and what my client is after every time.

I still stress about various things (obviously), but as hard as it is to explain, this is definitely not the same type of stress. I worry about not making enough money on certain months and I still stress about some projects I take on for example, but that’s just because I’m putting pressure on myself. And if I make a mistake, I know that there’s nobody else but me to blame, which sometimes can feel quite hard to admit. But at the same time, everything you do, you do it for your business, and the satisfaction you get from it is worth all the stress you can feel in various situations.

I know it’s going to sound weird, but most of the stress I feel whilst working is good stress. The kind that makes you want to aim higher, work harder on that project and show something you’re super proud of to your client. The kind of stress that makes you jump with excitement when you’re reading that client’s feedback that you were so worried about and that in the end is very positive. And when your client is unhappy, you do all you can to make him/her happy again not because you know that your boss will be after you if you don’t, but because you’re doing it for you, your business and your peace of mind. So I kind of prefer that.

I’m definitely more tired.
Although, I can’t decide if it’s because I’m getting older too… haha! But weirdly enough, I’ve noticed that since last year, I very easily fall asleep on the couch whilst watching a movie at night. And the only thing that has changed since then is the fact that I’ve gone freelance. At one point Jason got annoyed because every night I would fall asleep at like 9.30pm whilst we were watching a movie and I would wake up at the end of it and complain that I didn’t see half of it. Yes, I would somehow manage not to blame myself but would rather complain about the fact that we will need to watch that movie again.

I honestly think it’s because I constantly think about a 1000 things at the same time and my brain is way too tired at the end of the day to concentrate on a movie. That or the fact that I’m becoming an old granny.

Flexibility.
I tend to stick to a schedule to keep organised (see my previous post here!) but I’m very aware of the fact that I’m my own boss and can change that schedule whenever I need to. One thing I try to do is to have my Friday afternoons off when I’ve finished all the work I needed to do that week. I also like the fact that even if I’m ‘late’ one morning because I felt super tired, nobody is going to yell at me for starting my work at 10am instead of 9am!

A good example was when my brother had a motorbike accident. As I’m working on a laptop, I didn’t think twice about staying almost two weeks at my parents’ so that I could help whenever I could whilst working the rest of the time. I basically just need my laptop, my external hard-drive, and a good internet connection. Well, having my graphic tablet helps a lot too.

Also, no need to ask your boss about holiday dates! Although it’s a tricky topic as to be honest, I’ve had less holidays since being self-employed purely because when you don’t work, you don’t earn any money (obvious but good to remember!). It’s easy to have half a day or even a day off here and there, it’s less easy to have whole weeks off, even more when you’re just starting! But I have more regular clients now and it’s getting easier for me to have time off as long as I plan it well and tell my clients as early as I can.

I value my time whilst working (and not working) a lot more.
Yes, Monday mornings can still be a bit hard, but definitely not as much as when I was working a 9-5 job. I’m no longer just looking forward to the weekend, I’m also looking forward to starting new projects, having an exciting meeting with a new client, or making time to work on my own projects and blog. But I also value my weekend a lot more as I make a point of not working for two days and it’s the opportunity to plan things, go out and explore or just relax a bit.

I think I value my time a lot more because I’m the one deciding when I should work and when I shouldn’t, but also because I actually enjoy what I do and most days are just good days. I mean, we all have frustrating days, things that go wrong and projects that are harder than others, but everyday I wake up feeling the same, no matter what day of the week it is, I’m just glad to start a new day and do what I love.

Money is tight.
Not only do I value my time more, but I also value my money more too. If you’ve read my previous post about how Jason and I manage our money (You haven't? Here it is), you know that I’ve always been careful with it, but that since I’ve gone freelance, I’ve been extra careful spending it.

When I worked at a design company, I definitely felt like I deserved the money I was earning because I was working hard but I have to say, when you earn money from your own project that you managed from beginning to end and that you worked hard to keep your client happy whilst being proud of your work, it just doesn’t feel the same. You feel like you really deserve every penny from it and that you should spend it very wisely because you don't know when you’re going to get some more.

I’m not quite at this stage anymore as I have more regular work and I get paid for various projects regularly, which makes managing my money a lot easier. But still, I’m far from rolling in gold and although I would happily do the same work for free, as a couple we also need to pay for the rent, bills, food, etc. Money doesn’t make you happy, but it helps a bit! But actually that’s not quite the point. The point is that when your client pays you for the hard work that you’ve done on your own, it feels a lot more special than getting a paycheck at the end of the month, even though the amount you’re getting can be a lot lower.

My slippers don’t last long.
Well yes, that’s one thing I’ve come to term with last year: my slippers are getting destroyed a lot quicker than they used to. And you know why, because I literally live in them. Did I say I was becoming a granny earlier?!

I’m not the type of person that would work in her pjs, I always get fully dressed ready to go out of the house if I need to, but I definitely don’t wear shoes in my house. So I wear my cosy slippers all day for at least 5 days of the week, and the poor things are suffering from it.

So yeah, get ready to buy more slippers.

And finally, I feel like I can be 100% myself.
Don’t get me wrong, I still felt like I could be myself around my colleagues, but when you’re working with other people around you, you obviously need to care a bit more about what you’re saying and what you’re doing than when you’re on your own. Most of the time there was a good atmosphere in the studio I was working in, I got on with everyone and we had quite a bit of fun sometimes, but still, I tried to not sing out loud to every song I liked, I wasn’t burping all the time and I couldn’t just pick the phone and call my mom for half an hour whilst everybody else was working around me.

Now, when I do all that, it’s only Jason that I’m annoying, and you know what, he’s so used to it by now that he doesn’t even care anymore. Good for me! Sometimes he’s laughing at his desk because even without looking at me, he can hear my chair squeaking because I’m dancing on it like a maniac.

So the one thing I love about being self-employed and working at home is that no matter how I look, what I do or say, there’s nobody else to judge me but my boyfriend and I can be 100% weird :)

Wallpaper Giveaway - Run With It

First wallpaper giveaway of the year! I wanted this one to be quite special but had no idea what to do. I was back from my holiday slump and had no inspiration at all. Until one day when I was falling asleep, I thought about having warm cream and pink tints in wavy shapes with a dark blue circle and loads of breathing space around. And the idea was born!

I didn't do any sketches this time and went straight on Photoshop. I was basically going with the flow and it felt really good. Hence the title of the wallpaper set! I had an idea and I just ran with it to see where it would take me. The result is very different from what I usually do but I think this is why I like it so much. Hope you do too!

These wallpapers are free as usual but I would just like to remind people that they're only for personal use, thank you :)

Hello 2018!

Let’s be honest, 2017 was kind of messy for us! Moving back to France with my Welsh boyfriend (now fiancĂ©!) wasn’t the easiest task in the world. We lived at my parents for three months, trying to work as much as we could on our freelance businesses whilst looking for a car, a house to rent and most of all, dealing with the bloody French paperwork (which is hell by the way).

Things got easier when we moved into our house in April and we finally managed to settle a bit. Apart from the fact that the house was literally empty at the beginning, we managed quite well and things got a bit easier. Work was getting better and we started planning things. Towards the end of year, we just felt happier about our life and where we were at. But still, I think I’ll always remember 2017 as just a blurry, kind of crazy year and in a way, I’m glad to start a new one and leave it behind!

I feel like 2018 is going to be a good one, and I’m going to do everything possible for it. On a personal level, it’s going to be the year that we bring Jason’s old Ford Capri back from North Wales which is very exciting, and it’s also going to be the year of our marriage, which is even more exciting! We’re planning the smallest wedding in the world with only our close families (literally just our parents and siblings) and we’re so happy about that. We have a tiny budget for it as we both agree that spending a lot of money for just one day doesn’t feel right to us, and the fact that it’s going to be very simple is perfect for us.

We’re also hoping to be able to plan a couple of weekends away or even just a nice holiday somewhere nice. We’ll see! I decided that there was no point planning too much and having loads of goals to reach by the end of the year. I prefer to go with the flow and see how things turn out!

Business-wise though, I am planning to change a few things, the main one being the growth of my Etsy shop (yay!). I finally feel like it’s time to offer more than just greeting cards and I’m currently working on three illustrated A4 prints for kids bedrooms, two notebooks (A5 and A6) with nice lettering and patterns on them, and even a tote bag with a nice print on it! I’m really hoping that it will bring my shop to the next level and that you guys will like them all :)

I’m also concentrating on the fact that I’d love to work on more children’s books and I’m going to do my best to attract the right people/clients for it. Plus, I’m still part of TeamAuthor Uk and I’m excited to work on more exciting projects with them!

So yeah, I’m happy to have a fresh start and I’m definitely looking forward to everything that 2018 holds for us. Make sure to follow along!

Coup de Coeur - Alyssa Guerrero

I've discovered this super talented lady through Instagram (check her out!) and I'm so pleased I did. I love everything she does and I'm always looking forward to the next piece of design she's going to share.

Alyssa Guerrero is truly an inspiration for me in terms of her illustrative and lettering skills. She manages to represent a fruit or even a building with only a few lines and honestly, I'm always in awe of people that can do that! Plus, her artworks always have this vintage feel with a lot of texture, which is exactly what I like!

Lately I've been working a lot more digitally for my client projects and Alyssa makes me want to grab my brushes and paint again. If you're digging her art too, you definitely need to have a look at her shop right here. Also, check out her blog to download the 'Just Start Yo' wallpaper!
